Stricter Regulations Urged for Food Supplement Advertisements Amid Misleading Claims

Consumer advocates are demanding stricter control over advertisements for food supplements, expressing concern over safety, efficacy, and misleading marketing practices. In a survey by the Federation of German Consumer Organizations (vzbv), it was revealed that nearly a quarter of respondents consider the products as a form of natural medicine, despite them being food items.

Moreover, the survey indicated that almost eight out of ten respondents use food supplements, with over half using them at least once a week. Surprisingly, nearly half mistakenly assume that the products undergo health safety tests before they become available in the market.

On social media platforms, food supplements are sometimes marketed with unapproved health claims, as reported by the vzbv. The organization appeals for stricter regulation to prevent companies from making false health promises.

Consumer advocates advocate for specific measures to address these concerns. They want clearer labeling, transparency regarding ingredients, potential side effects, and interactions with other medications. Moreover, they push for more pre-market approval processes and stricter enforcement of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) to ensure the quality and safety of food supplements.

The lack of clarity in current labeling and advertising regulations, the potential health risks, and the need for consumer protection compel stricter rules for food supplement advertisements. By implementing stricter regulations, consumer advocates aim to protect consumers from potential health risks, financial exploitation, and misinformation.

  • To enhance transparency and address concerns over food safety, there should be stricter regulations implemented in the labeling and advertising of food supplements.
  • In light of the survey findings, it is essential that food supplements undergo rigorous health safety tests, using scientific evidence, and follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) as part of the pre-market approval process.
