Setting Sail for Ocean Change 2025: Arved Fuchs Tackles Climate-Marine Nexus

Sailor Arved Fuchs scheduled for 'Ocean Change' event in the year 2025 - Arved Fuchs set to appear at the 2025 Ocean Change event

Polar explorer and wordsmith Arved Fuchs has embarked on another chapter of his "Ocean Change" voyage. With his crew, he set sail on Sunday aboard the historical vessel "Dagmar Aaen" from Flensburg. As he chatted with the German Press Agency before hitting the waves, Fuchs revealed, "We've been cooking up this project for a decade now." The focus? Climate change's overwhelming effects on the humbling sea realms. "These two forces are inseparable," he asserted. Fuchs is an ardent proponent of cross-disciplinary collaboration, so various institutions sustain the journey.

This voyage takes them deep into the ecologically delicate inner sea that is the eastern Baltic, and further into the expansive North Sea and the eastern Atlantic. The route encompasses stops at Stralsund, Greifswald, Swinemünde (Poland), Klaipeda (Lithuania), and Riga (Latvia). Passing by Gotland (Sweden), the expedition ventures through the Kattegat and Skagerrak into the North Sea. An intended pitstop in Föhr is on the horizon, followed by a dash through the English Channel, steering towards Brittany and Cornwall, and finally weaving west into the eastern Atlantic. A timely return to their home port of Flensburg is scheduled for late August, weather permitting.

On board, the "Dagmar Aaen" holds the power to gather crucial data

Fuchs explained, "The 'Dagmar Aaen' allows us to detect data in areas not frequented by numerous research ships." With smart measurement technology, the crew captures and shares pertinent information.

Founded by Fuchs in 2015, the Ocean Change initiative takes on the transformative changes occurring within the oceans and their consequences on the climate and coastal landscapes.
