Tomsk's Campus Shrinks Slightly, Construction Delayed Until 2026
Tomsk, May 14 - RIA Tomsk. The size of the future Tomsk inter-university campus' buildings has been reduced from 193,000 to 163,000 square meters in the process of joint project work with a public-law entity (PPC) "Single Customer," according to Timur Muhamedjanov, the head of the Tomsk region's Department of Urban Development, reported to RIA Tomsk on Wednesday.
Previously, reports stated that the architects aimed to reduce construction costs for the Tomsk inter-university campus, shrinking the allocated land area for the project by 30,000 square meters. Construction, which was initially scheduled for 2025, is now planned for 2026. According to Muhamedjanov, the land area assigned for construction has been reduced, not the overall campus area.
Muhamedjanov stated, "We have optimized the building sizes of the campus from 193,000 to 163,000 square meters. The creation of a modern inter-university campus in Tomsk is ongoing, and our region continues to actively collaborate with federal bodies overseeing the creation of university campus networks, including with PPC 'Single Customer.'"
He confirmed that optimization of the campus' building sizes was conducted during the refinement of the architectural and planning solutions of the campus, considering the updated Russian federal guideline for university buildings. However, the sum of construction costs following the optimization was not specified by the official.
The project, which includes construction for 6,000 students with labs and a sports center, is considered the largest investment in the region over the past decade and was initially estimated at 42 billion rubles (as of April 2023). The scheduled date for completion is now the fourth quarter of 2027.
The originally announced total area for the construction in 2023 included 162,700 square meters for dormitories for 6,000 students, 15,900 square meters for a multi-purpose center, and 13,300 square meters for sports and recreational facilities with a swimming pool.
In 2023, the administration of the Tomsk region, together with the "Granite" Group and "Gazprombank" OOO "Tomsk Student Campus," signed a concession agreement for the construction of the inter-university campus. In the same year, it was announced that PPC "Single Customer" would be involved for the approval of project design and supporting the development of project and cost estimates, as well as for project cost optimization.
- The modern inter-university campus in Tomsk, which includes facilities for 6,000 students with labs and a sports center, is part of an ongoing collaboration between the region and federal bodies, particularly in health-and-wellness facilities and fitness-and-exercise centers.
- In the process of optimizing the architectural and planning solutions for the Tomsk inter-university campus, the administration kept science and sports in mind, ensuring that the reduced building sizes would not compromise the educational and recreational standards of the project.
