BMI: A Vital Health Indicator for Adults and Children

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used tool to assess weight and health risks. It's calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in meters squared. The formula was invented by Belgian statistician Adolphe Quetelet in the 19th century. Today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers online BMI calculators for all ages.

BMI is interpreted differently for adults and children. For adults, it's categorized as underweight (below 18.5), normal (18.5-24.9), overweight (25.0-29.9), and obese (30.0 and above). For children and teens, it's based on percentile rankings. A high BMI can increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other serious conditions. Conversely, a very low BMI can lead to bone loss, decreased immune function, and anemia.

BMI is not perfect. It may overestimate body fat in athletes and underestimate it in older adults. Despite this, it's a useful tool to determine whether a person is at an unhealthy or healthy weight. The CDC reports that more than two in three adults and about 17 percent of children and teenagers are considered overweight or obese, highlighting the importance of BMI awareness and management.
