Celebrate the Paternal Bond in 2025: A Day Dedicated to Honor and Acknowledge Fathers

Life would've been a struggle without your consistent effort, buddy. If you hadn't stuck to your job, we wouldn't have had a roof over our heads or food on the table. You toiled for years, ensuring we had a comfortable living space. Sadly, you fell ill in 2011 and after a grueling twenty months, you were gone. Roughly three years after your retirement, you left us at the tender age of sixty-five. Even though you underwent months of intensive chemotherapy, it wasn't enough to save you.

Learning about your Leukemia diagnosis, I started to pray. If you were still around, I'd be wishing you a happy Father's Day today.

Insights:

The prospects of surviving Leukemia can vary significantly depending on factors such as the type of leukemia, the patient's age, and the treatment's effectiveness. For instance, children with leukemia have an approximately 94% survival rate for at least five years after diagnosis. Young children fighting acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have an even higher survival rate of around 90%.

In contrast, the survival rate for Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) tends to be lower. Researchers are striving to improve outcomes by understanding why certain treatments fail and developing personalized therapies. For adults, the one-year survival rate has demonstrated improvement over time, but it remains lower compared to other leukemia types.

Thankfully, the five-year relative survival rate for leukemia patients overall has expanded substantially over the years, from about 75% in the mid-1970s to over 91% in recent data, largely due to advancements in chemotherapy and collaborative research efforts.

The Leukemia that affected Charles F. Johnson in 2011 was a challenging battle, given the lower survival rates of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) compared to other types. Despite his brave fight through months of intensive chemotherapy, the chemo was not sufficient to save him. Today, as we remember him, we can appreciate the progress made in the field of medical-conditions such as cancer, including leukemia. Over the years, health-and-wellness advancements, particularly in chemotherapy and collaborative research, have improved the five-year survival rate to over 91%.
