Chaos erupts at medieval-themed birthday bash, leaving 14 individuals hurt

A fire broke out in the castle park of Purgstall an der Erlauf on Good Friday, causing a major incident (NF10 - major emergency) due to the large number of injured. The fire, which took place on a campsite where 250 guests from a medieval scene were camping, was successfully controlled by the fire watch and other guests before the arrival of the fire brigade.

According to the police spokesman, Johann Baumschlager, a participant keeping watch by a fire pit discovered the fire and alerted everyone present. The fire was caused by a burning candle near a bed, which unfortunately led to the affected tent being completely destroyed.

Fortunately, a one-and-a-half-year-old child sleeping in the tent was rescued in time. The pregnant mother and her husband were not in the tent at the time of the fire as they were on their way to the toilet.

14 of the 15 people, including a child, had to be taken to nearby hospitals with injuries of uncertain severity, mainly due to smoke inhalation. A coincidentally present emergency paramedic initiated first aid immediately, and the fire watch set up according to old tradition was attentive and likely prevented more victims.

Common safety measures for campsites with tents and campfires, especially relevant to medieval or Renaissance festival settings, focus on fire prevention, containment, and supervision. These measures include using contained campfires only, avoiding fire bans, choosing fire-safe locations, supervising fires continuously, fully extinguishing fires, prohibiting collecting live wood, having emergency preparedness, and designating camping areas for families.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the Purgstall fire brigade took over the follow-up operations and checked the site for hotspots. Numerous emergency services from the districts of Scheibbs and Melk, a doctor's emergency vehicle, and a coordinator from the emergency call center Lower Austria were sent for support. A total of 15 people received medical care.

This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety measures at campsites, especially during outdoor festivals where many tents and open flames are present close together. Balancing the enjoyment of campfires with responsible fire safety and environmental protection is crucial in ensuring a safe and enjoyable festival experience for all.
