Chlorine Gas Leak at Solingen Pool Prompts Safety Response

A chlorine gas leak at the Vogelsang indoor swimming pool in Solingen on Saturday led to a hazardous materials incident. The local municipal management, responsible for the facility, swiftly responded to ensure public safety.

Automatic measurements initially indicated increased chlorine levels in the affected room. The operator immediately implemented ventilation measures to reduce the levels. Further investigations revealed that a chlorine cylinder had been exchanged shortly before the incident, which may have contributed to the leak.

The incident caused traffic disruptions on Focher Street as firefighters in protective gear responded to the scene. Despite the disruption, there was no danger to the public at any time. The incident was contained to a room housing chlorine gas cylinders used for pool operation. Firefighters conducted additional measurements and successfully closed the cylinders, preventing further leakage.

Subsequent measurements confirmed that chlorine levels had decreased to a safe level. The Solingen fire department completed their operation after about an hour.
