Construction laborer meets fatal end in accident along Rama II Road in Bangkok, Myanmar individual identified as victim
A Grisly Accident in Bangkok:
In a heartrending turn of events, a Myanmar worker met his untimely demise at a construction site on Rama II Road, Bangkok, on the grim morning of Sunday. The incident occurred in Bang Mod subdistrict, Chom Thong district, just near Sombunwit School on the outbound side of Rama II Road. The area was part of an elevated expressway construction zone, which had been temporarily closed for traffic.
Upon receiving a distress call about a worker falling into a trench, rescue teams were promptly dispatched. Upon arrival, they discovered the victim, a man of 39 named Mr. Mew, unconscious and partially submerged in murky water at the bottom of a three-meter-deep trench. Tragically, he was crushed under a heavy concrete slab and had already lost the battle against his injuries by the time he reached Bangpakok 9 Hospital.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the ground suddenly gave way as they were installing drainage pipes beneath the elevated road. Mr. Mew, who was working at the bottom of the trench, was tragically buried under the collapsing soil and concrete.
Authorities are currently gathering evidence and questioning witnesses, including the site supervisor, to ascertain the cause of the collapse. The site in question forms part of the Rama III-Dao Khanong-Western Outer Ring Road expressway project, overseen by the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT), with the intention of connecting with the Bang Khun Thian-Ban Phaeo intercity motorway (M82).
Since this unfortunate incident, safety measures at construction sites across Bangkok have been fortified, in light of the government's commitment to ensuring compliance with safety standards.
In an effort to minimize the possibility of such accidents, the Ministry of Labour and other agencies have intensified inspections, enforcing protocols for heavy machinery, elevated structures, and hazardous zones. Furthermore, the "Safe Cons. Together 90 Days" campaign has been implemented, emphasizing five crucial rules: clear designation of construction zones, designing load-bearing structures according to engineering principles, inspecting heavy machinery as per safety standards, maintaining close supervision by responsible personnel, and ensuring all workers wear complete safety gear.
Regular site visits and evaluations by representatives from EXAT, the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare, and partner agencies are also taking place to improve safety standards for workers and local residents. Investigations by the Engineering Institute of Thailand following the collapse have highlighted the importance of human oversight in construction, underlining the need for stringent safety protocols and vigilant supervision to preempt similar tragedies.
In an attempt to hold contractors accountable for safety standards, the "Contractor Report Cards" system is being implemented, which will track contractor performance and potentially disqualify those found guilty of negligence. The Cabinet has also approved revised ministerial regulations for the contractor tracking system, which are currently under review by the Office of the Council of State. By enforcing strict safety standards and monitoring contractor performance, the authorities aim to prevent future incidents and ensure a safe working environment for construction workers and the public.
