Cousin Murdered and Perpetrator Staged Suicide in Auraiya to Deceive Authorities, Victim Identified as Man from UP
In Auraiya, Uttar Pradesh, a shocking incident has come to light, as a 33-year-old man stands accused of raping and murdering his 14-year-old cousin on the day after Raksha Bandhan. The man, in an attempt to conceal his heinous crime, attempted to make the murder appear as a suicide by hanging the victim's body.
The incident has devastated the victim's family, especially her parents, and has left the community in shock. The case was registered under IPC sections for rape and murder, as well as provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The police investigation was initiated due to discrepancies found at the crime scene, including blood stains and marks inconsistent with hanging. Post-mortem results confirmed sexual assault and DNA samples matched the accused. Local authorities noticed suspicious behavior from the accused during questioning.
The case is set to begin in the Auraiya POCSO court shortly. Candlelight vigils and women's groups are demanding the death penalty for the accused in the Auraiya case. Conviction under the laws he faces, including Section 302 (murder), Section 376 (rape), and Section 6 of the POCSO Act (aggravated penetrative sexual assault), can result in life imprisonment or the death penalty.
The trial's conclusion could serve as a deterrent for similar crimes in the region. However, crimes such as the one in Auraiya highlight the prevalence of assaults committed by known individuals or relatives in Uttar Pradesh.
Crimes involving minors, especially in rural areas, have been a significant concern in Uttar Pradesh. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2023 report, Uttar Pradesh recorded over 6,800 cases of rape, with minors accounting for more than 30 percent of victims.
While we await the upcoming NCRB reports for 2023 to 2025, it is crucial to note that Uttar Pradesh has historically reported a high incidence of crimes including rape and murder, with rural areas showing significant vulnerability, especially among minors. The lack of recent detailed public data means that for precise and current figures, awaiting NCRB or local government publications is necessary.
Community policing in rural areas, school-based awareness programs, improved forensic facilities, public campaigns, and village-level vigilance committees are proposed measures for prevention and protection. Legal reforms on case prioritisation are being tested in the UP man rapes and kills cousin trial.
Psychologists warn that survivors and families affected by such crimes often suffer long-term mental health issues. It is essential that the justice system responds with urgency, accountability, and vigilance, to ensure that no celebration, tradition, or family tie can guarantee safety without these essential elements.
