COVID-19's Hidden Threat: Heart Risks Persist After Recovery

COVID-19 can pose significant risks to heart health, even after recovery. While the virus primarily affects the lungs, it can also cause various heart problems. Those with existing heart conditions are particularly vulnerable.

Potential heart issues after COVID-19 include arrhythmia, blood clots, heart attack, heart failure, myocarditis, pericarditis, and stroke. These can be caused by increased inflammation, low oxygen levels in the heart, or stress cardiomyopathy. Even those without preexisting conditions can be at risk, but the likelihood of severe illness or worsening conditions is higher for those with cardiovascular disease.

Getting vaccinated is crucial, especially for those with heart issues. The COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective for this group, and it's a high priority to get vaccinated. However, the risk of myocarditis and pericarditis is higher after getting COVID-19 than after vaccination.

Regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or preexisting medical conditions, the risk of COVID-19-related heart disease remains elevated. Those with severe COVID-19, preexisting cardiovascular conditions, diabetes, hypertension, chronic lung diseases, weakened immune systems, cancer, obesity, or liver or kidney diseases are at an increased risk. The virus can directly infect heart cells and blood vessels, leading to their damage. Therefore, it's essential to take precautions to avoid COVID-19 and get vaccinated if eligible.
