Deadly Starvation Claims Lives of 7 People, Including a Child, in Gaza amid Persistent Israeli Blockade
In the heart of the Middle East, the Gaza Strip continues to grapple with an escalating humanitarian crisis. The crisis, primarily caused by an 11-week total siege and a near-complete blockade imposed by Israel, has led to severe food insecurity, widespread starvation, and malnutrition, particularly among children and pregnant women.
The military campaign in the Gaza Strip began in October 2023, following an attack by Hamas-led fighters that left around 1,139 people dead in Israel and over 200 taken hostage. Since then, at least 60,430 Palestinians have been killed and 148,722 injured in the Gaza Strip, according to Gaza health authorities.
The Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip reported that on Saturday, at least 51 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes, including 27 who were reportedly seeking aid. This tragic incident brings the total number of starvation-related deaths in the Gaza Strip to 169, with 93 being children. Seven additional deaths due to starvation and malnutrition were reported by the Health Ministry on August 2.
The blockade and bombardment by Israel are worsening famine conditions in the Gaza Strip. Residents are facing an increasingly desperate struggle to access food and aid. Acute malnutrition among children under five has more than doubled between March and June 2025, with about one in ten children screened malnourished. Over 20,000 children have been treated for acute malnutrition, with at least 16 child deaths reported so far.
Severe malnutrition affects over 40% of pregnant and breastfeeding women, endangering maternal and infant health. Families often survive on a single, nutritionally poor meal per day, and many go days without eating. The destruction of approximately 70% of Gaza’s infrastructure, combined with limited "safe zones" now covering less than 12% of the territory, has led to mass displacement and heightened vulnerability of civilians.
Attempts to distribute food have led to deadly incidents; since May 27, 2025, at least 851 people were killed and 5,634 injured while trying to access food supplies at distribution points militarized by Israeli forces. Humanitarian agencies report that current Israeli policies severely limit aid access, forcing reliance on inadequate and dangerous methods such as costly airdrops. The blockade and fuel shortages are hampering critical services including healthcare, sanitation, and child protection.
The situation in the Gaza Strip is critical. Hunger is a critical threat, worsened by the collapse of essential services and humanitarian access. Unless there is an immediate and substantial humanitarian response, the crisis threatens to push the population into full-scale famine.
- The escalating humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, driven by war and conflicts, has also negatively impacted mental health and general news, as the population grapples with food insecurity and malnutrition.
- The worsening conditions in the Gaza Strip are not just about physical health, including severe malnutrition among children, pregnant women, and over 40% of breastfeeding women; it is also a matter of nutrition, impacting the overall health-and-wellness of the affected population.
- The ongoing crisis in the Gaza Strip, characterized by a blockade and wars, has also created a political issue, with concerns raised about the limited aid access, restrictions, and the impact on essential services like healthcare and child protection.
