Speaking of HIV, the latest figures show 365 new cases in Hong Kong. That's great progress, but it ain't time to pop the champagne yet! Hong Kong still has a ways to go before ending HIV as a public health threat by 2030.
Underneath the positive numbers, there's some unsettling trends. Plenty of these new cases are folks who only seek medical care when it's too late—their immune system is already wrecked, or they've already got an AIDS-defining illness.
It's not all high-risk populations, ya see. Prevention strategies might have a couple of blind spots. And let's not forget about stigma. That ol' fear of judgment keeps plenty of people from gettin' tested and startin' treatment on time. That fear could easily derail all the progress we've made.
Solving this problem demands more than just government support. We need deeper cross-sectoral collaboration. Continued investment in prevention efforts must be the norm. While the government has been a crucial player, it's time for the private sector to step up and lend a hand. This approach mirrors mainland China's 2024 State Council directive, which calls for community-wide support for HIV prevention.
Here's a glimpse of the current strategies and challenges in this fight:
- HIV Prevention and Control Strategies: Over the past four decades, Hong Kong has made impressive progress through effective HIV prevention and control measures leveraging global medical advances.[1]
- Behavior Change Techniques (BCTs): Digital HIV prevention interventions targeting young adults and adolescents effectively use BCTs such as providing info on health-behavior links, encouraging safe behavior, and more.[5]
- Discussions and Updates: Local medical education and conferences like the 10th APACC 2025 explore the latest developments in HIV prevention, including the suitability of oral versus intramuscular injections.[3]
But we've got our work cut out for us. Challenges remain due to the hidden nature of HIV symptoms delaying diagnosis, non-adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART), and population mobility.
So, let's not be complacent. Let's keep fighting, Hong Kong. Keep those letters coming, and together, we'll make a difference!
