Mass Shooting at New York City's Park Avenue Building: Four Dead, One Injured
In a tragic turn of events, a mass shooting took place at 345 Park Avenue, near 52nd street, in New York City on Monday. The shooting resulted in four deaths, including a police officer, and one injury.
The gunman, identified as Shane Devon Tamura, entered the building's lobby and opened fire, hitting a police officer, a security guard, and two civilians. Tamura, a 27-year-old from Las Vegas, was later found dead from a self-inflicted wound.
The building, which houses large global companies, including Blackstone and the National Football League (NFL), saw the deadliest mass shooting in New York City since 2000. The NFL's offices are located on the fifth floor of the Park Avenue building.
Tamura, who wore body armor and used an M4 assault-style rifle, reportedly had a suicide note in his pocket that mentioned chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease linked to head trauma. However, police have found no evidence that Tamura actually had CTE or a direct connection to the NFL.
Tamura had a documented mental health history and was licensed to carry a concealed firearm. He was a former high school football player from Southern California but did not play professionally.
The victims, except for Officer Didarul Islam, are being withheld until their families can be notified. Officer Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh, had worked in the police force for three and a half years and had two young sons, with his wife pregnant with their third child. He was later transferred to a hospital in a "guard of honor" ceremony.
Officials, including Mayor Eric Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul, expressed their condolences to Islam's family and called him a hero.
The shooting is among at least 254 mass shootings in the US so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
Friends and classmates of Shane Devon Tamura have expressed shock at the news, describing him as a great teammate and a nice guy. The investigation into Tamura's motive is still ongoing.
