Doctor Warns: Unpopped Popcorn Kernels Pose Health Risks
A doctor has warned about a potential risk of eating unpopped popcorn kernels. Dr. W. Hesse stated that these can lead to a condition called bezoar formation in the gastrointestinal tract.
The American Academy of Pediatrics also cautions against giving popcorn to children under 4 due to choking hazards. Ingesting a large number of unpopped kernels can cause a mass collection in the intestinal tract, indeed leading to bezoar formation. This can cause abdominal pain and may require medical attention.
Moreover, unpopped kernels can pose dental risks for older children and adolescents. They can potentially damage teeth due to their hard texture.
To ensure safety, it's best to avoid giving popcorn to young children. Older children should be advised to eat popped kernels only. If abdominal pain occurs after eating unpopped kernels, medical help should be sought.
