Dried fruit product recall in 19 states.
Whoa, listen up, everyone! Here's the scoop on Floria Dried Apricots. A recall has been initiated because these tasty treats contain sulfites that aren't mentioned on the packaging. Talk about a hidden catch!
Turkana Food Inc. made the call and announced the recall through the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) website. These apricots come in neat 200-gram paper packages.
The FDA's recall notice explains that tests carried out by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets revealed that the recalled dried apricots contained sulfites that weren't indicated on the labeling. Sneaky, huh?
Now, if you don't know, sulfites are often used as preservatives in food and drinks. But some folks can have a bad reaction to them, producing symptoms like hives, swelling, nausea, wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. In extreme cases, exposure to sulfites might trigger anaphylactic shock, which is a serious, life-threatening allergic response. Yikes!
So far, no one's reported being sick from these undeclared sulfites. But if you're sensitized to sulfites or have asthma, play it safe and avoid consuming the product. Instead, return it to the store where you bought it for a refund.
The affected states are Florida, Kentucky, Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Texas, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maryland, Ohio, Alabama, Missouri, and California.
Turkana Food is working with the FDA to sort out the problem with the manufacturer and has ceased production and distribution of the product in the meantime. Based in New Jersey, Turkana Food is a family-owned and operated ethnic food distributor that serves independent supermarkets, chain stores, and institutions.
Stay tuned for more updates on this situation. In the meantime, keep an eye on your Floria Dried Apricots and steer clear of any packages with the lot number "440090478-15-333," the UPC label "2539560010," and an expiration date of November 2026. Your health is worth it!
The Food and Drug Administration's recall notice, initiated by Turkana Food Inc., indicates that the undeclared sulfites in Floria Dried Apricots may pose threats to individuals sensitive to sulfites or with asthma. This recall emphasizes the need for transparency in food-and-drink labeling, as well as the importance of health-and-wellness awareness in lifestyle and culture.
