Empowering Cycling Lessons for Women Regardless of Ethnicity

In the picturesque city of Nordhorn, Easter holidays saw the culmination of a highly successful women's bicycle course. Organised by the Equal Opportunities Office of the city and SV Vorwärts Nordhorn, this twelve-participant course was fully booked, demonstrating a growing interest in promoting mobility, overcoming fears, and making new connections through cycling.

The course, led by certified cycling instructor Theresia Debeerst-Debevere, followed a meticulous step-by-step plan, preparing participants with light exercises tailored for cycling. Theresia, a member of the ADFC, employs the "moveo ergo sum" method of the Cycling Instructors' Association, ensuring a safe and enjoyable learning experience for all.

Anja Milewski, the Gender Equality Officer of the city of Nordhorn, expressed her delight at the course's success. "It's fantastic to see so many women gaining the confidence to cycle and take part in our joint bicycle tour," she said.

Accompanied by their trainer and the chairman of the Grafschafter ADFC, Burkhard Werner, the participants successfully covered ten kilometres during the final session. Training equipment and special scooters were provided, making the learning process accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

At the end of the course, all participants felt confident enough to participate in the joint bicycle tour, marking a significant milestone in their cycling journey. This initiative not only promotes mobility but also fosters a sense of community and camaraderie among the participants.

As the city of Nordhorn continues to encourage active mobility and gender equality, it is clear that these bicycle courses play a vital role in empowering individuals and breaking down barriers. With the success of this year's course, it is hoped that even more women will be inspired to take up cycling and reap the numerous benefits it offers.
