Himachal Pradesh Extends Curfew Amidst Monsoon Crisis

Enforced Curfew Amid Coronavirus Pandemic in Himachal Pradesh

In a move to combat the ongoing monsoon crisis, the Himachal Pradesh Government has extended the state-wide curfew, which was initially imposed due to the Coronavirus outbreak. The decision was made in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, who also emphasized the need for effective measures to combat the spread of the virus in the state.

The curfew will remain in effect until further orders, with several high-ranking officials present at the meeting, including Jal Shakti Minister Mahender Singh Thakur, Education Minister Suresh Bhardwaj, and Speaker State Vidhan Sabha Vipin Singh Parmar, among others.

In an effort to ensure the availability of essential commodities during the extended curfew, Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur has directed officers to prevent any inconvenience to the people. To prevent hoarding of essential commodities, strict measures are being taken to monitor their distribution.

Meanwhile, the state is grappling with unprecedented monsoon rains, floods, and landslides. Since late June, the state has experienced catastrophic flooding, with over 75 lives lost, 31 missing, and widespread infrastructure damage as of early July. A red alert was declared for 10 districts, including Shimla, Mandi, Solan, and Kullu, signaling severe risk due to ongoing heavy rains. As of July 24–28, a yellow alert for heavy rain remains in place, warning of continued adverse weather.

To manage the disaster response, the Disaster Management Authority is actively coordinating rescue and relief operations, with emergency shelters established and rescue teams on standby. District authorities are urging residents in high-risk areas to remain alert and evacuate if advised. Over 129 roads have been blocked statewide, impacting movement and essential supplies. Schools and colleges in high-risk areas like Manali and Banjar remain closed.

District level coordination committees, established earlier, continue to work for better coordination with the administration. Each district will be led by a district-level chairman, with Vipin Singh Parmar leading the committee for Kangra District, Mahender Singh for Mandi district, Suresh Bhardwaj for Shimla and Kinnaur district, Sarveen Chaudhary for Bilaspur District, Ramlal Markanda for Lahaul and Spiti District, Virender Kanwar for Una district, Bikram Singh for Hamirpur district, Govind Thakur for Kullu district, Rajiv Saizal for Solan district, Hansraj for Chamba district, and Rajiv Bindal for Sirmour district.

As Himachal Pradesh battles both the monsoon crisis and the ongoing threat of Coronavirus, the state government is taking all necessary steps to control the outbreak and ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens.
