Enhanced protection for victims of violence: Saxony-Anhalt fortifies privacy safeguards

In Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, the fight against gender-based and domestic violence has received a significant boost with the expansion of its support network. The state now boasts eight clinics where victims can access confidential trace evidence collection (CTEC) services.

The university clinics in Halle and Magdeburg remain the initial locations for CTEEC services, but the state has added several more facilities to its network. The Städtisches Klinikum in Dessau, the Johanniter Krankenhaus in Stendal, the Asklepios Klinik in Weißenfels, the Evangelisches Krankenhaus Paul Gerhardt Stift in Wittenberg, the Carl-von-Basedow Klinikum in Merseburg, and the Helios-Klinik in Sangerhausen are all now part of this comprehensive network.

Victims of violence can rest assured that their personal data is treated confidentially during CTEEC. The collected evidence, which includes samples from the victim's body and clothing, is stored for up to 30 years. If a victim decides to file a report during this period, they can allow the police to access the stored evidence.

Equality Minister Petra Grimm-Benne has emphasised the importance of CTEEC for victims of violence. She underscores the need to further develop and ensure the accessibility of this network. Dr. med. Carolin Richter from the Institute of Legal Medicine at the University Medicine Halle (Saale) shares this sentiment, stressing the need to make CTEEC available throughout Saxony-Anhalt in a local and low-threshold manner.

It's crucial that victims report to the emergency rooms of these clinics as soon as possible after experiencing violence. Timely trace evidence collection is key in ensuring a thorough investigation.

The "Evidence Network" project, implemented by the Institute of Legal Medicine at the University Medicine Halle, aims to make confidential trace evidence collection available throughout Saxony-Anhalt in a local and low-threshold manner. This expansion of services is a significant step forward in the fight against gender-based and domestic violence in the region.

  1. For the children who may be affected by domestic violence, it is essential to equip them with knowledge about sexual health and mental health, providing therapies and treatments to help them cope.
  2. In the realm of health and wellness, understanding the effects of medical conditions on a person's body and mind becomes crucial when dealing with victims of violence.
  3. As the fight against gender-based and domestic violence continues, politicians should consider implementing policies for women's health that promote equal access to medical services.
  4. Concurrently, general news outlets and media platforms should focus on reporting about this issue, raising awareness and impacting the stance on crime and justice.
  5. In line with efforts to improve women's health and combat violence, the integration of CBD products into medical treatments could potentially offer alternative pain management options for victims.
  6. Lastly, to maintain a safe and supportive environment for all, information about protective measures, support services, and helplines, such as CBD, women's health resources, and sex and mental health services, should be made readily available to the public.
