Enteroviruses: Common Viruses, Serious Complications Possible

Enteroviruses, a common group of viruses, cause millions of infections in the US annually. While most cases are mild or asymptomatic, serious complications can occur, particularly in children and those with weakened immune systems.

Enteroviruses enter the body through the intestine and can spread easily through contact with contaminated surfaces, shared drinks, or airborne particles. They often cause no symptoms or mild flu-like symptoms. However, they can lead to serious complications, such as aseptic meningitis, encephalitis, myocarditis, and neurocognitive deficits. Certain strains like EV-A71 and EV-D68 are more likely to cause severe symptoms. Babies, children, and teens are more susceptible to symptoms than adults. The CDC estimates that enteroviruses cause about 10-15 million infections in the US each year.

Though rare, serious complications from enterovirus infections can occur. Those most at risk are children and individuals with weakened immune systems. If symptoms worsen or severe complications arise, immediate medical attention is crucial.
