In the face of a grim prognosis, Patrice Aminati continues her fight against cancer. Her husband, TV presenter Daniel Aminati, opens up about his coping mechanisms as he grapples with the possibility of losing his wife.
In April 2023, Patrice Aminati revealed her malignant melanoma diagnosis – better known as black skin cancer. shortly after welcoming their first child, the 30-year-old is now battling metastases, including in her lungs. Amidst the pain and treatment, she has periods of remission, only to be faced with new metastases. Today, she is receiving palliative care. Back in early 2024, a radiation therapist informed her that she might have only six months left to live and that she should 'make the most of the time left until Christmas.' Amidst the shock, Patrice's fighting spirit blindsided her, and she vowed, "We'll see about that at Christmas!" Each patient writes their own story, after all.
Moving Forward: Dreams of a Second Child & Renewing Vows
Despite the cancer drama, the couple is envisioning future plans. They announced their intentions to renew their wedding vows on April 27, 2027. The dream of another child remains in their hearts, but a second pregnancy is currently impossible due to Patrice's medication.
Inevitably, thoughts about the unfavorable outcome linger in their lives. Daniel couldn't bear the thought initially, but he understood that he needed to at least entertain the possibility. "I will never befriend this fear," he says, yet he finds it necessary to confront it, envisioning life without Patrice. He observes her braiding their daughter's hair and wonders, "How will I do that?" He reflects, "I might be a pretty good dad, but I can't do it as well as you can."
"I've imagined myself, lying next to you, at night, only to wake up to find you gone. Every morning, I am relieved when you wake up again," he reveals the phases of fear that occasionally overwhelm him. Fear is potent, he admits, but surrendering to it is off the table – that's what he's learned.
"I've never been afraid of death, itself. I don't believe in heaven and hell, but I believe that some form of liberation awaits us. What terrifies me, however, is leaving my daughter behind. I wonder how Daniel will manage," Patrice shares her mindset. Yet, she hopes that Daniel will find solace and support after her passing.
The Power of Speaking Up
Aware that not much is said about cancer in Germany, Patrice explains, "Cancer is not a simple fracture. The disease is eerie and initially invisible. Having cancer means talking about the possibility of one's own death. Many prefer not to."
Nevertheless, the decision to share her diagnosis was a courageous one, she emphasizes. "Since then, I can share stories, learn from others on how they've managed the disease, or hear from people who finally went for cancer screenings. It gives me strength to know I might have helped someone."
