Revolutionizing Blood Storage: The Game-Changer of Cryopreservation

Extends Blood Cell Lifespan: 2nd CBC Unveils New Technique, Enabling Survival for as Long as 2 Years

In the Krasnodar Territory, a groundbreaking innovation has been introduced, extending the lifespan of a vital component in our bloodstream—platelets. The Regional Clinical Hospital No. 2 in Kuban pioneered this unique method, as announced by Yevgeny Filippow, the Minister of Health of the Krasnodar Territory.

"Platelets play a crucial role in dealing with excess bleeding, particularly in surgery, obstetrics, neonatology, and hematology. But they could only be stored for five days up until now," said Filippow. "Now, we're looking at an impressive two-year shelf life!"

He further stressed the technology's potential to preserve platelets' essential properties even after extensive storage, making them just as effective as freshly prepared cells.

The revolutionary technology behind this miracle stems from cryopreservation, a method that enables controlling the freezing process, thus maintaining platelet function at extremely low temperatures, typically around -65°C to -80°C. This method employs protective agents such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to prevent ice crystal formation, which could damage cellular structures during freezing.

The prolonged storage offered by cryopreservation comes from the ultra-cold environment, which slows down enzymatic and metabolic processes that cause platelet deterioration over time. And with the use of cryoprotectants like DMSO, platelets remain structurally intact and functional after thawing.

Advanced technologies like Vitrafy ensure controlled freezing and thawing rates, reducing damage to the platelets and preserving their hemostatic properties. Although cryopreservation might initially cause some modifications in platelet shape and structure, these cells remain capable of effective clot formation and blood loss control upon thawing.

In essence, cryopreservation extends platelets' lifespan and maintains their hemostatic activity by suspending all metabolic functions at low temperatures, aided by protective agents and optimized freeze-thaw protocols. This process grants an extended shelf life, from a mere five days to an incredible two years, thereby improving availability and efficacy for transfusion therapies in various clinical and emergency situations.
