Farmers will be able to utilize the latest plant protection products provided by BASF starting from the year 2026.
In the ever-evolving world of agricultural research, BASF continues to push boundaries with its latest innovation – Luximo. This groundbreaking herbicide is set to revolutionize farming practices, particularly in the battle against field horsetail and couch grass.
Luximo, expected to enter German practice in 2027, boasts a completely new mechanism of action for controlling these tenacious weeds. The active ingredient for Luximo has been fully developed since 2018, marking a significant milestone in BASF's 110-year history of agricultural research.
The use of Luximo will be closely monitored by local advisors to ensure its effective and reliable performance against existing resistances. It can be applied flexibly, taking into account local soil conditions and weather conditions, making it a versatile tool for farmers.
BASF's focus on finding solutions for challenges such as new pests, diseases, and extreme weather conditions is evident in Luximo's development. The company has invested approximately 2.5 million euros daily in agricultural research, a testament to its commitment to the industry.
Meanwhile, Luximo's approval process is currently underway, with the active ingredient's approval expected to be completed by 2026. This delay in practical implementation is due to the lengthy approval processes in the EU and Germany.
In the meantime, BASF has other promising products in the pipeline. For instance, Delan® SC, planned for the 2026 season, is a new fungicide for controlling false mildew in viticulture. It contains the well-established active ingredient Dithianon and offers excellent rainfastness, good miscibility, and reduced active ingredient amount for effective disease control.
The area heavily infested by field horsetail in Germany is approximately 400,000 hectares, making the need for effective solutions like Luximo all the more pressing. The herbicide against field bindweed (Feld-Schneidezahn) was introduced in Germany in 1960, but the fight against weeds continues to be a significant challenge for farmers.
Maria Valtin, the Head of Technology & Consulting Germany at BASF, leads the company's efforts in developing innovative solutions like Luximo. The company's latest offering, Divexo®, a fungicide for the 2022 season, is a testament to BASF's dedication to providing reliable and effective products against resistant fungal strains. Divexo® has high rainfastness, UV stability, and is applied at a rate of 2 litres per hectare.
With Luximo's imminent arrival, farmers can look forward to a more reliable and effective tool in their fight against field horsetail and couch grass. As BASF continues to innovate and invest in agricultural research, the future of farming looks promising indeed.
