Father completes 300-kilometer run in support of his daughter in Budapest
In a critical turn of events, non-binary anti-fascist activist Maja T. has been on a hunger strike since June 5, 2025, protesting their detention conditions in Hungary. The activist, who was extradited from Germany in June 2024, has lost over twelve kilograms and has significantly reduced blood pressure and pulse due to the prolonged hunger strike.
Maja T., who has spent most of their time in solitary confinement, was recently transferred to a prison hospital near the Romanian border to allow better medical monitoring. However, concerns remain due to the lack of interpreter support at the hospital and the continuation of the hunger strike.
The extradition of Maja T. to Hungary occurred half a year ago, but it was done despite an explicit prohibition by the German Federal Constitutional Court in April 2025. The Hungarian court has refused to postpone the trial, asserting a high risk of absconding, despite Maja's fragile health and ongoing hunger strike.
Wolfram Jarosch, Maja T.'s father, is leading a high-profile campaign in Germany to secure Maja’s transfer back to Germany for a fair trial and better conditions. He has publicly highlighted the dire state of Maja’s health and the harsh prison conditions, including the infestation of bedbugs and cockroaches in Maja's cell.
Jarosch has undertaken a march from Jena to Berlin with a petition signed by 100,000 people demanding Maja’s return to Germany. German political figures, including Martin Schirdewan, leader of the Left Party in the European Parliament, have joined calls for the German government to prioritize Maja’s return. However, Chancellor Friedrich Merz has not commented publicly on the case yet.
Solidarity demonstrations have taken place in various German and Austrian cities, including Berlin, Dresden, Vienna, Düsseldorf, and Jena, to raise awareness and demand justice for Maja T. Supporters continue to describe the detention conditions as “white torture” due to solitary confinement and other rights violations.
As Jarosch nears Berlin, the capital of Germany, he plans to present the petition to Wadephul and Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) to demand Maja’s transfer back to Germany. However, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) has assured that he is actively involved in the matter, but it remains unclear whether a meeting will take place in the coming week.
