Federal Sex Offender Given Lengthy Sentence in Federal Penitentiary for Abusing Minors through Snapchat

Federal offender, with a prior sexual misconduct conviction, handed a 45-year sentence in federal penitentiary, accused of exploiting minors through Snapchat platform.

In a significant move to combat child sexual exploitation, Darren Ringenberg, a registered sex offender from Louisville, Kentucky, was sentenced to 45 years in federal prison. The conviction was a result of Ringenberg's criminal activities that began through online communication with a nine-year-old girl living in Monroe County, Indiana.

Ringenberg, who used the Snapchat username "devil_hell6969", falsely claimed to be sixteen years old during his communications with the young girl. He coerced her into sending sexually explicit images and videos, and directed her as to what images to send, how to take the photos, and even suggested they could meet in person in the future.

The FBI and Bloomington Police Department launched an investigation into the case, which was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. During the investigation, law enforcement found text messages, many of which were sexual in nature, between Ringenberg and various other unidentified minors. They also discovered many Snapchat screen recordings of minor victims engaged in sexually explicit conduct on Ringenberg's cell phone camera roll.

Ringenberg was convicted of two counts of sexual exploitation of a child while required to register as a sex offender. This conviction followed his previous conviction in Kentucky in 2019, where he was found guilty of twenty counts of Possession of Matter Portraying a Sexual Performance by a Minor.

Acting U.S. Attorney Childress thanked Assistant U.S. Attorney MaryAnn T. Mindrum for prosecuting this case. The sentence was imposed by Chief U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt.

Project Safe Childhood, launched by the U.S. Department of Justice in May 2006, is a comprehensive initiative to address the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. It coordinates federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the internet. The initiative focuses on investigating and prosecuting crimes such as the production, distribution, and possession of child pornography, as well as solicitation of children for physical sexual contact. It also works to identify and rescue victims of child sexual exploitation, supports community-based efforts to prevent exploitation, and collaborates with other educational initiatives.

If you are a victim of child sexual exploitation, please contact your local police department. Resources for victims of child exploitation can be found on the website https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdin/project-safe-childhood. It is crucial to remember that these crimes will not be tolerated, and efforts will continue to be made to protect children and hold offenders accountable.
