FK UNAIR Leads Measles Outbreak Response Immunization in Sumenep

Universitas Airlangga's Faculty of Medicine (FK UNAIR) has stepped in to assist the Measles Outbreak Response Immunization (ORI) program in Sumenep Regency, East Java. The program, running from August 25, 2025, to September 6, 2025, aims to control a measles outbreak that has sadly taken lives.

FK UNAIR is collaborating with the Ministry of Health, East Java Provincial Health Office, Sumenep Regency Health Office, and the Faculty of Public Health for this critical task. The team is focusing on communities with low ORI coverage, such as TK Qurrota Ayun, where 200 children were targeted for vaccination.

The ORI program is open to all children within the eligible age group, regardless of their prior vaccination history. The decision to vaccinate is based on the child's health at the time of vaccination. The team is conducting educational sessions, overseeing screening and post-vaccination monitoring, and preparing healthcare workers to manage potential Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI).

FK UNAIR deployed a team, particularly from the Department of Pediatrics, to support the ORI program due to the urgent need for physicians. Dr. Fery Setiawan, an FK UNAIR employee, led the first deployment to Sumenep Regency, East Java.

The ORI program, led by FK UNAIR, is a significant effort to protect children and curb measles transmission. Health officials hope to expand vaccine coverage and control the outbreak through simultaneous vaccinations across the region.
