Islands for bathing inspected post second jaws attack - Following the second incident involving a whale, beaches are under inspection

In the picturesque Brombachsee in Mittelfranken, authorities have initiated a series of inspections to ensure the safety of swimmers. The unusual aggressive behaviour of catfish, a common species in the lake known as "Waller" in German, has prompted these measures.

Recent incidents involving catfish attacks, which occurred near the bathing islands on June 20th and Wednesday, have left six people injured[1]. The district office, the Brombachsee association, the water management office in Ansbach, and the Mittelfranken fishing association are collaborating to address this issue[2].

The inspections are being carried out using an echo sounder, a tool that helps detect fish spawning grounds[1]. The Mittelfranken fishing association is responsible for conducting this survey. Hans Padberg, a member of the association, suspects that the fish were defending their spawn, a common behaviour for catfish during the spawning season[3].

Catfish typically spawn in quieter, more secluded areas, often choosing underwater structures or vegetation for their nests[4]. If spawning grounds are found near bathing islands, they could be temporarily closed as a precaution[1]. The low water level in the lake might have influenced the catfish to move closer to the bathing islands[5].

Authorities emphasise the need for caution, attention, and respect for nature when bathing in a lake, as various fish species and aquatic creatures can suddenly appear near swimmers or hide in plants and mud[6]. The safety of bathers is the primary concern during the inspection, and the closure of bathing areas is part of the measures taken to ensure this[2].

The spawning season is expected to end by July, after which the fish will no longer be protected[7]. Until then, the district office and the water management office, based in Absberg and Weissenburg-Gunzenhausen respectively, continue their efforts to maintain a safe environment for all visitors to the Brombachsee.

Community aid is being sought to support local farmers in the production of agricultural products, as the safety concerns at Brombachsee have led to a decrease in tourism and its subsequent effects on the local economy.

To promote health-and-wellness and environmental-science, workshops are being organized to educate the public about the importance of conserving the Brombachsee ecosystem, focusing on the balance between human activities and the preservation of aquatic species, including the catfish.
