Foreign tests confirm Yulia Navalny's claims that her husband, Alexei Navalny, was deliberately poisoned.

In a shocking turn of events, the wife of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, Yulia Navalnaya, has accused Russia of killing her husband and demanded the release of the findings from two foreign laboratories that concluded he was poisoned. Navalny, a vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin, died at the age of 47 in a Russian prison on 16 February 2024. His death sparked widespread protests and international condemnation. In a video posted last year, Ms. Navalnaya revealed that biological material from her husband was smuggled abroad and examined by two laboratories in different countries. The specific countries where the analyses were conducted remain undisclosed, but it is known that samples were analysed by a lab in Germany and possibly another country. Ms. Navalnaya has not specified the type of poison found by the labs. However, she has expressed her belief that the results are of public importance and should be published. She also hinted that the truth about her husband's death is inconvenient for some unidentified politicians in the West, but gave no specifics. Navalny was arrested upon his return to Russia from Germany in 2021, where he underwent treatment for a poisoning attempt. He was serving sentences on fraud, extremism, and other charges at the time of his death. In one of his last essays, Navalny admonished the Russian elite for its venality and expressed hatred for those who squandered a historic opportunity to reform the country after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. He also forecasted that Russia could face seismic political turmoil, including revolution. In 2023, Navalny described Putin's Russia as a brittle criminal state run by thieves, sycophants, and spies who care only about money. His allegations were met with dismissal by the Kremlin, who have consistently denied any involvement in his poisoning and death. President Putin has stated that there were plans for a prisoner exchange involving Navalny with the West before his death. However, these plans never materialised. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has stated that he is unaware of Ms. Navalnaya's remarks. In her video, Ms. Navalnaya described her husband's last moments, including him feeling ill, crouching in pain, and vomiting. She also showed a picture of what she claimed was the punishment cell where Navalny died. Ms. Navalnaya has demanded the release of the labs' findings regarding the 'inconvenient truth' of her husband's death. The broader implications of this demand remain to be seen, but it is clear that the mystery surrounding Navalny's death continues to cast a shadow over Russian politics.
