Future Vaccination Hubs Demand a Defined Plan of Action

With the holiday season fast approaching, health insurance funds in Germany are already feeling the strain, having complained about being overwhelmed. As the country prepares for the winter months, there is a pressing need for a clear strategy regarding the administration of COVID-19 vaccinations.

The German Association of Towns and Municipalities (DStGB) has called for a roadmap for the future of corona vaccination centres, emphasising the importance of these facilities in quickly vaccinating as many people as possible. Burkhard Jung, the association's president, has suggested that vaccination centres could play a crucial role in vaccinating students during the summer months.

However, there is uncertainty surrounding the transition of vaccinations from vaccination centres to GP surgeries and occupational doctors. It is not specified how this transition will be managed in the coming months, and it remains unclear when these medical professionals will be able to fully take over the vaccinations.

Jung has also highlighted the need for clarity regarding the vaccination of children aged 12 and over. He stated that it should be quickly clarified where these young people will receive their vaccinations soon. Some vaccination centres can only currently administer second vaccinations due to a lack of vaccine, raising questions about the capacity to accommodate additional age groups.

If vaccination centres are gradually scaled down, it must be taken into account that once-closed centres cannot simply be 'switched back on at the push of a button'. This underscores the importance of a strategic plan for the future of these centres, to ensure they can be efficiently reopened if needed.

Jung has also emphasised the importance of vaccinating as many young people as possible before the new school year. He stated that it is crucial for students to receive at least the first vaccination before returning to school.

The primary responsibility for developing a clear strategic plan for the future of COVID vaccination sites lies with regional health authorities, such as the Kassenärztliche Vereinigung (KV) Bremen and related healthcare organisations. They must coordinate their efforts with bodies such as the Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) and health ministries overseeing legal and financial frameworks.

In conclusion, as Germany navigates the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there is a pressing need for a clear strategy regarding the administration of vaccinations. The German Association of Towns and Municipalities has called for a roadmap for the future of corona vaccination centres, and it is essential that regional health authorities work together to develop a strategic plan for the coming months.
