Making matters worse, their research revealed the most dangerous of these chemicals - perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) - which was once commonly used in nonstick pans before being deemed hazardous by the EPA. PFOA is a real doozy, though, as its small uptake in the body leads to significant genetic modifications, impacting nearly 600 genes, while other PFAS could only muster 147 gene alterations at most.

Specifically, PFOA reduces genes involved in synaptic growth and neuronal function. Combined exposure to these six PFAS results in disturbances to essential biological pathways that affect hypoxia (low oxygen) signaling, oxidative stress, protein synthesis, and amino acid metabolism - all of which are crucial to healthy neuronal development and function.
