Google's Pixel Watch 4 may potentially address the barriers hindering progress in their wearable devices
Google's much-anticipated Pixel Watch 4 is set to make a splash in the wearable technology market, boasting several confirmed features and rumored upgrades, particularly in health monitoring, charging, repairability, and emergency functions.
Confirmed Features
The Pixel Watch 4 will come equipped with a comprehensive health suite, including ECG, SpO2 (blood oxygen), respiratory rate, heart rate variability tracking, and Loss of Pulse Detection, expanding Fitbit's health monitoring capabilities. Other confirmed features include a dual-frequency GPS for improved location accuracy, support for over 40 sports modes, real-time training guidance, a battery life of up to 40 hours for the 45mm model and 30 hours for the 41mm model, and a 25% faster charging time compared to its predecessor.
The watch will also feature an Actua 360 circular screen with a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, Google’s Gemini AI assistant for gesture control, and a physical design available in two sizes, multiple case colours, and Active Sport Bands.
Rumored Features
Rumours suggest that the Pixel Watch 4 may include Breathing Emergency Detection, a life-saving tool to monitor breathing-related health issues. Additionally, satellite SOS messaging, an accessory called "Quick Charge Dock" for more convenient bedside charging, and an additional AI co-processor are all possibilities.
Repairability Insights
The relocation of the charging pogo pins to the side of the watch instead of underneath could indicate easier access during repairs, potentially reducing damage risk and improving repairability. However, explicit statements about the overall internal repairability are yet to be made.
Expected Launch and Availability
The official launch of the Pixel Watch 4 is expected around August 20, 2025, with retail availability potentially occurring later in October. The exact nature of the emergency features, as well as the availability of replaceable parts like the battery or cover glass, remains unclear.
This move towards easier repairability for the Pixel Watch 4 follows a Google executive's mention in September 2021 that the team was considering making devices easier to repair. The Pixel Watch 4 is rumoured to break the tradition of difficult repairability for the Pixel Watch series.
Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the August 20 event!
