Government Leader: Intestinal Centre Rhein-Erft travels nearly 300 km for participation in ILCO NRW charity cycling event
In North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), Germany, the "Every Meter Counts - ILCO moves NRW" charity bike tour took place on August 28, 2024. This event, organised by the self-help organization Deutsche ILCO e.V., aimed to raise awareness and funds for people living with a stoma, in connection with World Stoma Day observed annually on October 6th.
The Gastrointestinal Center Rhein-Erft, one of only 11 certified Visceral Oncological Centers in a hospital in the whole of NRW, participated in the event. Dr. Gernot P. Meyer, the coordinator of the center, noted that ILCO offers visiting services and local discussion groups for their patients. This collaboration reflects a shared goal: to maintain the best possible quality of life for those affected by colorectal cancer and to raise awareness of their needs.
The Colorectal Center Rhein-Erft contributed significantly to the charity bike tour, covering 276 kilometers. In addition, the charity tour led by the center added another 356 kilometers to the "Every Meter Counts" campaign.
Prof. Dr. Christoph A. Jacobi, the Chief Physician of the Gastrointestinal Center, supports the "Every Meter Counts" campaign due to the valuable work of ILCO. He emphasized that from diagnosis to treatment with surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or antibodies, to the aftercare phase, the Gastrointestinal Center Rhein-Erft is a first and important point of contact for patients with gastrointestinal or pancreatic cancer in the region.
