Gym remains shut due to unforeseen reasons revealed

Berlin's Lichtenberg district grapples with an unnecessary closure of a gymnasium, as authorities argue over waste disposal regulations. Since November 11, the newly renovated facility at Am Tierpark 19 has been ready to reopen, yet it remains shut due to the absence of a paved waste disposal area on the premises.

Students eager to train have been left on the sidelines because of this regulation dispute. According to Schul- und Sportstadtraetin Sandy Mattes (49, SPD), the lack of a secure waste disposal facility precludes the gymnasium's operation, owing to the risk of littering and pest infestation.

Despite attempts at finding temporary solutions and consulting with the Berlin Stadtreinigung, the Berliner Stadtreinigungsbetrieb (BSR) insists on a paved waste container stand and transport routes, as outlined in paragraph 9 of the BSR waste management ordinance. A BSR spokesperson stated that the surface should be level, secured with non-slip, durable material, and able to withstand the demands of transporting the containers without making it more difficult.

The CDU fraction chairman in Lichtenberg, Benjamin Hudler (33), has voiced his frustration, referring to the issue as unacceptable. "A completed sports hall remaining unused for more than six months is simply inexcusable, especially in times when sports facilities are urgently needed," he said.

Remarks from Councilwoman Mattes suggest that all parties involved are working diligently to find a swift solution to the issue. It is worth noting that disputes over waste disposal regulations can sometimes lead to operational challenges for buildings or facilities, as they may involve concerns about compliance with local or national standards, infrastructure maintenance, or community or legal disputes.

In total, approximately 1200 sports halls in Berlin are currently either partially or completely closed, according to the latest statistics. As authorities work to resolve the ongoing dispute, students in Lichtenberg eagerly await the reopening of their gymnasium.

The ongoing dispute over waste disposal regulations has left the gymnasium at Am Tierpark 19 in Berlin's Lichtenberg district unfitted for operation, hindering health-and-wellness activities for its students. With sports facilities in high demand amidst the current closures, the delay in reopening this fitness-and-exercise facility is a significant concern, as noted by Councilman Benjamin Hudler.
