Hunting Association Slams Upcoming Hubertus Mass in Hochdorf
The Hunting Association (IG Wild) has slammed the upcoming Hubertus Mass in Hochdorf, set for September 28. The event, featuring nature horn blowers Auerhahn Luzern, has sparked controversy due to its celebration of hunting, which the association argues is incompatible with Christian ethics.
The IG Wild bei Wild has criticized the event, set to take place in the church of Hochdorf at 10:30 AM, for blessing hunters who participate in driven and special hunts. These hunts often result in the harassment, injury, and death of countless wild animals. According to the Veterinary Association for Animal Protection, up to two-thirds of animals do not die immediately during driven hunts.
The association also takes issue with the event's timing, occurring on the memorial day of Saint Hubertus of Lüttich on November 3. Saint Hubertus, a patron saint of hunters, became an opponent of hunting after encountering a cross-bearing stag. The IG Wild argues that celebrating a service that blesses hunters for the systematic killing of defenseless creatures sends a wrong signal.
Contrary to popular belief, hunting does not lead to fewer wild animals. Instead, it causes earlier sexual maturity in female animals, increasing the birth rate. This means that hunting is not suitable for permanently regulating wild populations.
The IG Wild bei Wild has sharply criticized the upcoming Hubertus Mass in Hochdorf, arguing that it is not compatible with Christian ethics and does not contribute to the regulation of wild populations. The association urges the responsible parties to reconsider their support for the event.
