Grass Pollen Alert: High Pollen Counts Plague Grass Allergy Sufferers

Intense Struggle for Individuals Suffering from Grass Pollen Allergies - Increased Risks for Pollen Allergy Sufferers

Hey there!

You've probably noticed it: The grass pollen count in Berlin and Brandenburg is pretty high right now. Matthias Werchan from the German Pollen Information Service (PID) confirms that the high grass pollen season has begun with the weather change at the end of May.

The grasses are going wild! Currently, we're talking about over 100 grass pollen per cubic meter of air in the region. Why? Because of the many blooming grasses species causing those high loads.

Got the wind at your back? Well, it might have distributed the pollen everywhere, even in the 'less plant-rich' center of Berlin. You can't escape it in the city these days, says the landscape ecologist.

Here's a fun fact: Berlin has more blooming grass areas than before, mainly due to less mowing to protect insects. In Brandenburg, however, there are substantial rye fields, but most of them have already withered and contribute little to the grass pollen load.

Saw some white, cotton-like fluff floating around? Don't fret about it! It's not pollen but poplar seeds, also called poplar fluff, and it doesn't cause allergic reactions.

Over Whitsun, the load might decrease due to changeable, cooler weather. Slower growth at lower temperatures and rain washing pollen out of the air? All good news for allergy sufferers.

  1. In light of the high grass pollen counts, the community policy for allergy sufferers in Berlin should emphasize awareness and precautions, especially during windy days.
  2. Considering the high grass pollen season, it might be beneficial for employers in Berlin to implement flexible working hours or remote work policies to alleviate employees' exposure during high pollen times.
  3. The medical-conditions policy of Berlin's health and wellness centers should focus on providing adequate care and support for allergy sufferers, offering resources for effective relief and prevention.
  4. For not only Berlin but also Brandenburg, it would be helpful to implement an employment policy that encourages farmers to use more eco-friendly farming practices, such as reducing the use of rye fields, which contribute significantly to the grass pollen load. Additionally, implement a skincare policy for public workers who work outside, providing them with protective gear and policies to minimize skin exposure to pollen. Furthermore, a nutrition policy could be implemented within schools and workplaces, promoting a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables that support overall health, including mental health and immune system functioning, during allergy season.
