India's Crime Against Women, Children Soars; Road Accidents Claim 476 Lives Daily

The latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report reveals a grim picture of crimes against women and children in India. Uttar Pradesh tops the list in crimes against women, while Madhya Pradesh has the highest rate of crimes against children. Meanwhile, road accidents and suicides continue to claim lives at alarming rates.

In a worrying trend, crimes against women have increased by approximately 1 per cent nationwide. Uttar Pradesh ranks first, with Maharashtra following closely. Uttar Pradesh also leads in murder cases, with Bihar trailing behind. Notably, Delhi, despite recording the highest number of cases per lakh population (1,509), has seen a decline of approximately 6 per cent in such crimes.

Turning to crimes against children, Madhya Pradesh has emerged as the region with the highest rate. Nationally, these crimes have increased by 9 per cent compared to last year. Kerala has the highest suicide rate, while Bihar has the lowest. Road accidents remain a major concern, with 174,000 people losing their lives in 2023, averaging 476 deaths per day. Sudden deaths also increased by 12 per cent, with 63,609 people dying suddenly.

The NCRB report underscores the urgent need for robust measures to combat crimes against women and children, and to address the persistent issues of road accidents and suicides. With Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh topping the lists for crimes against women and children respectively, state-specific strategies may be necessary to tackle these challenges effectively.
