Informed Individual Receives Details About:
In a coordinated effort to ensure traffic safety, the city of Bottrop has announced a series of preventive measures aimed at improving visibility and safety at intersections. This initiative comes in the wake of the incident in Warendorf, where municipal employees were accused, albeit ultimately acquitted, of negligence leading to a fatal accident due to poor visibility.
At a press conference on August 25, 2025, the Technical Deputy Mayor of Bottrop, Steffen Jonek, along with Daniela Mooser from the Department of Civil Engineering, and Fabian Fingerlin, head of the Traffic Department, outlined the city's approach.
The measures are preventive in nature, as emphasized by Jonek, focusing on the maintenance and creation of sight triangles at intersections. These triangular areas are crucial for drivers to safely turn from secondary roads onto main roads. The city is currently inspecting all intersections within its boundaries to ensure sight lines are clear in merging areas.
The size of the sight triangles depends on the permitted speed of the main road. At 30 km/h, the prescribed leg length is 30 meters, at 40 km/h it is 50 meters, and at 50 km/h it would be 70 meters.
Busy streets with accident hotspots are given priority over streets with low traffic volume and areas not prone to accidents according to accident statistics. The Horster Straße and Aegidistraße are the next measures to be tendered after the Scharnhöhlzstraße, which is currently undergoing 11 measures in the tendering process, with implementation planned for the first quarter of 2026.
All intersection areas in Bottrop are being checked to ensure sight triangles are maintained according to regulations. If necessary, the city must create sight triangles to ensure safety. This could involve structural changes, installation of bollards, creation of green spaces, or installation of appropriate signage with an absolute no-parking zone.
The city is also obligated to take action if sight triangles are not maintained. This could potentially lead to the installation of additional infrastructure to improve visibility and safety. The Department of Civil Engineering of the City of Bottrop must measure the sight triangles and inform the traffic authority of the resulting measures from the traffic safety obligation.
The "Guidelines for the Design of Urban Roads RaSt 06" apply in this case. The city is taking a proactive stance to ensure it cannot be accused of inaction regarding traffic safety, as highlighted by the incident in Warendorf.
This approach is part of Bottrop's commitment to prioritizing the safety of its citizens and visitors, and it underscores the city's dedication to maintaining and improving its infrastructure to meet the highest safety standards.
