Pollen Warning: Grass Allergies on Full Blast in Berlin & Brandenburg

Harsh Struggles Faced by Allergy Sufferers Exposed to Grass Pollen - Intense Impact on Pollen Allergy Sufferers due to High Pollen Counts

Hey there, allergy buddies! If you've been sneezing and sniffling lately, you're not alone. The grass pollen season is upon us, and Berlin and Brandenburg are currently in the thick of it.

Matthias Werchan, from the German Pollen Information Service (PID), confirms that the high season for grass pollen has arrived. You guessed it - the grasses are booming after the weather switch-up at the end of May.

We're talking about 'high loads' when there are 50 grass pollen per cubic meter of air. But, here's the kicker - current numbers in the region often surpass 100 pollen per cubic meter, thanks to the countless grass species spreading their pollen all over the place.

Windy weather's done its fair share of distribution, carrying pollen everywhere, even into the green-sparse heart of Berlin. Landscape ecologist, Werchan, says you can feel it all over the city now. But there's a silver lining - there are more blooming grass areas within Berlin than ever before, thanks to less mowing to protect insects.

Meanwhile, in Brandenburg, the rye fields have mostly faded and contribute little to the grass pollen load.

Fear not about the cotton-like fluff floating about – it's not pollen, but poplar seeds, or poplar fluff, as Werchan explains. Don't worry, it's pollen-free and won't bring on any allergic reactions.

So, what's the forecast like for the Pentecost weekend? It's set to be changeable and a bit cooler, offering some relief for allergy sufferers, as Werchan predicts. Slower growth at low temperatures and rain helping to wash pollen away from the air will make pentecost weekend a bit friendlier for those with grass allergies.
