Investigating the Hygiene of Glasses at Bremen Freimarkts
In a bid to ensure the highest standards of hygiene at the Bremen Freimarkt, the Bremen State Office for Food Safety, Animal Welfare and Veterinary Medicine (LMTVet) and the State Institute for Chemistry, Hygiene and Veterinary Medicine (LUA) conducted a joint check on the hygiene of glasses in the beverage stands. This marked the first-ever "Clean Glasses" action at the Bremen Freimarket.
During the investigation, five glasses were sampled from each establishment. The sampling process involved using swabs to wipe the rim and inside of the glasses. The swabs were then sent for microbiological examination, where the total number of germs and the number of enterobacteria were determined.
The results of the examination revealed that the majority of the sampled glasses were found to be well rinsed. However, three glasses were found to have issues. In response, two of the affected establishments were visited again by the inspectors to identify possible causes and to jointly establish measures to improve glass hygiene.
The purpose of the revisit was not just to address the immediate concerns but also to ensure long-term improvements. The method of cleaning glasses and the cleaning result were both inspected, both visually and microbiologically.
Looking forward, the "Clean Glasses" action will be repeated at the 990th Bremen Freimarket next year, aiming to maintain and further enhance the hygiene standards at the event. For those interested in the specifics of the glass cleaning process and its effectiveness, it would be best to contact the Bremen State Office for Food Safety directly or look for official reports from the State Institute for Chemistry, Hygiene and Veterinary Medicine.
