"Kostomarov's novel portrays the resilience of the human spirit, despair, and the unyielding will to survive, as expressed through flowing tears."
In the bustling city of Yekaterinburg, Russia, an international medical exhibition-forum, "Ural Healthcare," took place. A highlight of the event was a meeting with the formidable Roman Kostomarov, Olympic figure skating champion who triumphed over the odds. His talk focused on "Living and Winning All Your Life."
In January 2023, this Legend was struck down by pneumonia, followed by complications such as sepsis and circulatory issues. Doctors were left with no choice but to amputate both his legs below the knee and both hands. The nation was captivated by Roman Kostomarov's tenacious fight for life and health.
The Olympian, who danced with death and rose victorious, became modern medicine's poster child, embodying indomitable will, resilient human spirit, and the unwavering commitment of medical professionals. In our articles, we share his inspiring speech.
Roman shared that, despite the loss of his limbs, he continues to engage in sports daily, aided by prosthetics, even gliding back onto the ice:
- Sports fuel my spirit, fueling me with energy and a vibrant mood that lets me seize the day. Transitioning from feeling flattened and depressed, I regain a sense of normalcy.
Previously, my life boasted variety — tennis, hockey, football for a couple of hours. Yet, post-amputation, those activities are no more. Now, I primarily rely on a bicycle for cardio exercises and weight training to maintain my strength and spirit.
I've returned to the ice. Not as before, but the response from the audience was overwhelmingly positive. Sadly, I no longer experience the same exhilaration as before when I felt like a fish in water on the ice. Now, it takes more effort, but the sensation of speed and cool wind on my face is unparalleled. It's the activity I've known all my life, where I achieved success, representing my victories.
Though I no longer travel the country for competitions, I eagerly perform whenever the opportunity arises. The energy the audience emits is unique—it's something I'm used to and miss dearly. Although events have become sparse and demanding, the experience still fills me with immense pleasure.
When that horrific illness befell me, and I learned of the amputation of my limbs, it felt like I'd fallen from the loftiest mountain into a deep abyss. It was my own private apocalypse. The dread and tears were overwhelming, yet I found I couldn't give up.
Initially, I found myself in a daze, lost in a parallel world filled with nightmarish visions. My lowest point came when I realized that the amputation of my limbs was inevitable.
It took considerable time to accept my fate, to find the courage and reason to keep living. My unwavering support system — my wife, my loved ones, the knowledge that I had two children and numerous people who believed in me, kept me going. But there was despair first.
I owe immense gratitude to my loved ones, especially my wife, who bore the brunt of my struggle and stood by my side. She's a hero who carried the burden, witnessing every agonizing moment I went through. I truly believe that, if she were my mother, she wouldn't have lasted longer than me. Her words of encouragement and the hope they instilled helped me to fight and resist the challenges life threw at me. It's crucial not to be alone, especially in the darkest moments.
The sporting spirit I've cultivated since childhood has also played a significant role. The road to success is steep and arduous, with countless physical and mental hurdles. Long hours of training, minimal days off, grueling trips in freezing conditions, juggling partners, and financial hardship only to reach victories — it's all part of the journey. Many crumble, abandoning their dreams. But those who persist are rewarded with enlightenment, fueling their desire to reach greater heights.
