Lanark County Witnesses Launch of "We Stand with Survivors" Initiative, Marked by Banner Unfurling Event

Swinging into May, it's Sexual Assault Awareness Month over in Lanark County, Ontario. This year, the Lanark County Interval House and Community Support (LCIHCS) and the Women's Sexual Assault Centre of Renfrew County team up for the We Stand with Survivors campaign, highlighting the pressing issue of sexual violence, providing aid to survivors, and advocating for prevention efforts.

To kick things off, a powerful banner was raised on the 29th of April along the Ottawa Valley Recreation Trail at the Almonte branch of the Mississippi Mills Public Library. As Erin Lee, LCIHCS executive director, explains in a press release, this campaign is all about letting survivors of sexual abuse and assault know they are visible, heard, and supported. Emma Kinsman, LCIHCS communications coordinator, adds that the banner serves as a clear reminder that it's not just anti-violence organizations that care—it's the entire community standing together, expressing empathy, and showing solidarity for survivors.

The problem of sexual violence in Ontario remains sobering, with one in three women in Canada having experienced sexual assault during their lifetime, the majority of survivors knowing their attacker, and less than six percent of cases reported to police[1].

Since 1979, LCIHCS has been a beacon of hope for women and children facing domestic violence. Based in Carleton Place, the agency manages an emergency first-stage shelter, a second-stage residence, and offers a myriad of community support programs. The Women's Sexual Assault Centre of Renfrew County, operating since 1993, supplies assistance to individuals aged sixteen and older who have suffered sexual violence. The organization is funded by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services, in addition to public donations[1].
