Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim announced the launch of a new initiative to support the mental health of firefighters during a fundraiser event for the Vancouver Firefighter Charities on September 13.

This announcement comes after the successful fundraiser last week, which raised C$2.7 million for the Vancouver Firefighter Charities. In addition to this, donors have pledged a combined total of 3.5 bitcoin price, equivalent to approximately C$550,000, to the newly established mental health fund.

The fund will be administered by the Vancouver Firefighter Charities, with Eric Himmelman, the organization's executive director, promising that the funds will be distributed meaningfully. Himmelman also expressed gratitude for any funding and awareness going towards delivering more mental health support for struggling firefighters.

The initiative is in response to higher suicide rates among firefighters compared to the general public, according to the Canadian Mental Health Association. In December 2024, Sim tabled a successful motion asking city staff to make Vancouver 'man city friendly.'

City staff are expected to present a report on this initiative in the fall. Donations to the fund can be made in both cash and Bitcoin.

As of now, there are no available public updates or detailed reports on the current status of donations to the Mental-Health-Fund for firefighters. However, the launch of this fund marks a significant step towards addressing the mental health needs of Vancouver's firefighters.

Mayor Sim's commitment to mental health support for firefighters, as well as his advocacy for Bitcoin price, reflects his ongoing efforts to create a supportive and forward-thinking city.
