Vaccine Scientist Akash Yadav's Conviction Suspended by Uttarakhand High Court

In a significant development, the Uttarakhand High Court has suspended the conviction and five-year rigorous imprisonment of vaccine scientist Akash Yadav, who was found guilty of abetting his wife's suicide. This decision, made on August 3-4, 2025, allows Yadav to continue his crucial work in vaccine research and development.

The court's decision was based on the grounds of larger public interest and national interest, recognising Yadav's "undoubtedly essential" role in public health as a senior researcher at Indian Immunologicals Limited, a key vaccine manufacturer in India. The court highlighted that due to the conviction, Yadav was unable to perform his important duties in vaccine R&D, which has critical value for society.

Yadav, who holds a PhD in biotechnology from IIT Kharagpur, was initially convicted under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (abetment to suicide) related to the death by suicide of his wife in 2015. He was acquitted of dowry-related charges by a trial court in Rudrapur in 2022. Yadav was sentenced to five years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹20,000 by a Rudrapur sessions court earlier in 2025.

The court granted bail to Yadav and stayed the execution of his sentence during the pendency of the appeal. Yadav, who has been on bail since then, had been arrested in 2017 and spent months in custody.

As a senior manager at Indian Immunologicals Ltd., Yadav is directly involved in vaccine R&D. His research holds critical value for society at large. The suspension of his conviction effectively mitigates the immediate impact on his professional contributions, enabling continuity in critical vaccine development work amid ongoing legal proceedings.

The final legal outcome remains pending appeal. For the last three years, Yadav has served as a senior manager at Indian Immunologicals Ltd., a leading vaccine manufacturer. This suspension allows him to continue his vital work in the field of vaccine research and development.
