In a recent report titled "How Healthy Does Germany Live?", the German Health Insurance Fund (DKV) has shed light on the nation's health habits. The findings show a positive trend in physical activity, but concern over dietary habits and sedentary behaviour persists.

A significant improvement has been observed in the number of people engaging in sufficient physical activity to gain health benefits. More than two-thirds (68 percent) of respondents are now regularly active, whether through cycling to work, brisk walks after work, or other means. However, the report reveals that only 2% of the population meets the criteria for a healthy lifestyle overall.

One of the current biggest challenges is the amount of time spent sitting, with an average of more than ten hours on a workday. This sedentary behaviour is a concern, as it can contribute to various health issues, such as obesity and heart disease.

The report also highlights the need for improvement in dietary habits. Only about one in three (33 percent) meets the criteria for healthy eating, which is considered achieved if at least 20 out of a total of 30 possible points are reached.

Another worrying statistic is that almost one in five (18 percent) people hardly move at all in their free time and on transportation routes. This lack of physical activity can have a significant impact on overall health and wellbeing.

The surveys for the report were conducted in February and March 2025, and the report was created in collaboration with the German Sports University Cologne and the University of Würzburg. The findings suggest that while there has been some progress in physical activity levels, there is still much work to be done to improve dietary habits and reduce sedentary behaviour.

It's worth noting that the German Health Insurance Fund (DKV) typically tracks health behaviour in Germany, including percentage of adults engaging in regular physical activity, dietary habits including fruit and vegetable consumption, and sedentary behaviour trends. However, without direct recent data or reports from DKV in the current search results, specific or updated statistics for 2025 are not available. For the most precise and current numbers, consulting official DKV publications or German health surveys (such as the Robert Koch Institute’s studies) would be necessary.

In terms of alcohol consumption, slightly less than one-third (29 percent) of respondents claim to completely abstain from alcohol, with women performing slightly better than men in this regard. The average is 2% because the highest value for a healthy approach to alcohol is only achieved if one completely abstains from alcohol. This is less than in the last survey in 2023, when it was 9%.

The report also shows that only about one-third (30 percent) of those who sit a lot - at least eight hours a day - balance out the long sitting with an hour or more of exercise per day. This is an area that requires further attention and improvement to promote a healthier lifestyle among the population.

In conclusion, while there are positive signs in terms of physical activity levels in Germany, there is still a need for improvement in dietary habits and reducing sedentary behaviour. The German Health Insurance Fund (DKV) continues to play a crucial role in tracking and reporting on health behaviour in Germany, and their reports provide valuable insights into the nation's health habits.

  • Workplace-wellness programs should address the concern of excessive sitting in the workplace, as it contributes to medical conditions like obesity and heart disease.
  • Improving dietary habits is essential for achieving a healthy lifestyle, as only 33 percent of respondents meet the criteria for healthy eating, according to the German Health Insurance Fund's report.
  • Fitness and exercise play a crucial role in counteracting the negative effects of sedentary behaviour, with less than one-third of those who sit a lot balancing it out with an hour or more of exercise per day.
  • Mental health and chronic diseases are often linked to nutrition and fitness practices, making them key areas of focus for health-and-wellness efforts in Germany.
