Marketplace faces a predicament: the demand for trees remains high, yet procurement proves elusive

In the heart of Neubrandenburg, a pressing issue has been brought to the forefront: the need for greener and shadier inner-city areas, particularly the Market Square. On Thursday, 2nd October, this matter will be discussed in the Neubrandenburg city council.

Hans-Jürgen Schwanke (BSW/BfN) has submitted a proposal aimed at creating shade and seating areas on the Market Square. The proposal suggests investigating the feasibility of greening the square with large trees and planting structures, as well as considering mobile planting islands as an alternative.

However, concerns have been raised about the possibility of planting real trees on the Market Square due to the presence of an underground garage. Michael Stieber (SPD/Greens) and Andreas Wolff (BSW), an expert resident, have both expressed doubts about this.

Despite these challenges, the proposal emphasises the importance of greening the Market Square. It is said to contribute significantly to the quality of stay, city climate, attractiveness, and ecological sustainability. Moreover, the consideration of health aspects for older citizens is a key part of the proposal.

A variety of suggestions were made during the committee discussion, including artificial trees, sacrificing underground parking spaces for tree plantings, mobile shade installations, and narrow columns with sails.

As the summer months heat up strongly in Neubrandenburg, the need for action becomes increasingly urgent. The search results do not contain specific information about who will continue the discussion on the establishment of protective and seating areas at Neubrandenburg Market Square in the city council on October 2.

Despite no final solution having been found, the discussions promise to be an important step towards a greener and more comfortable future for Neubrandenburg's Market Square.
