Ministry seeks to diminish the proportion of smokers in Russia to 16% by 2030

Hear Ye, Hear Ye! The ministry's darned serious about shaping up Russia's health. Setting smoking, drinking, and healthy lifestyle goals, they've got big plans for the next few years.

In the smoking department, the share of smokers expects a slight dip from 18.6% in 2024 to a teensy bit lower at 18.17% by 2025. Meanwhile, the per capita alcohol consumption in 2024 clocked in at 8.38 liters, aiming to drop to 7.8 liters by 2030.

The ministry even set a lofty goal to double the proportion of citizens living healthily, currently at 9.7% in 2024. They're shootin' for 13.6%.

Mikhail Murashko, the health minion, announced these deets towards the end of April. He credits the impressive reduction in smoking rates, down from 39.5% back in 2009, to the tough love tactics against tobacco dependencies. Given the promising update, Murashko predicts a continued improvement in Russia's smoking culture.

Here's the skinny on their game plan:

  • They've been cracking down on alternative nicotine delivery systems like vapes and heated tobacco, aiming to restrict their use. In April 2023, the Russian government passed a bill to regulate e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products just like regular cigarettes. This bill is currently pending the upper chamber's approval and the president's signature.
  • This hardline approach on flavored and heated tobacco is similar to what other countries have done, tightening regulations to thwart these tobacco alternatives[3].
  • However, up-to-date details on comprehensive strategies to reduce alcohol consumption or boost healthy lifestyles, including prevention programs or cessation support services, remain elusive in the latest publicly available sources[3].

In a nutshell, while they're clamping down on vaping and heated tobacco to curb tobacco use, the rest of their plans for reducing alcohol consumption and promoting healthy living are a bit hush-hush for now[3].

The ministry is also focusing on science to address health-and-wellness differently, with an aim to increase the proportion of citizens living healthily in mental-health, fitness-and-exercise, and overall wellness. Despite the lack of concrete details on the strategies to reduce alcohol consumption or boost healthy lifestyles, the Russian ministry is working diligently on comprehensive prevention programs and cessation support services, yet these specifics remain to be fully disclosed in the latest publicly available sources.
