Last year, an impressive 88 individuals in the region of Hesse were rescued from perilous drowning situations by the dedicated volunteer force of the German Life Saving Association (DLRG). In light of this, it's worth noting that 3,081 volunteers donated a whopping 201,000 hours of their time to the association in 2024. These diligent lifeguards were instrumental in assisting a staggering 5,000 individuals on various beaches and watercraft throughout the year.

Unfortunately, tragedies did occur, resulting in 12 drowning deaths in Hesse in 2024. On a broader scale, the DLRG managed to save 1,446 people from drowning nationwide that year. In a statement, DLRG President, Ute Vogt, highlighted the unwavering commitment of her lifeguards, praising their tireless efforts, which ultimately save lives and contribute to a safer society.

The DLRG takes a proactive approach to prevent emergencies, particularly during the start of the bathing season. Vogt strongly advises swimming only in guarded waters, ensuring that a lifeguard can react swiftly in the event of an emergency. Beyond this, there are other hazards to be aware of when venturing into cold waters. Sudden immersion in cold water can put swimmers at risk, potentially overloading the heart and circulatory system. This can be particularly dangerous for older individuals, who accounted for approximately 60% of drowning deaths nationwide in the preceding year.

Noteworthy Insights:

  • The DLRG in Hesse has seen growth in both rescue operations and volunteer numbers due to intensified recruitment efforts, community engagement, youth programs, and training opportunities.
  • Emphasis is placed on public education, lifeguard training, regular exercises, use of modern equipment, focus on vulnerable groups, and cooperation with authorities to enhance water safety and reduce accidents.

In an attempt to further ensure safety and reduce accidents, the DLRG in Hesse has announced the introduction of new community and employment policies. These policies are designed to strengthen their outreach, foster a more conducive environment for volunteerism, and bolster their ongoing efforts in water safety education. Additionally, as a part of their holistic approach to health-and-wellness, the DLRG is also considering implementing fitness-and-exercise programs for their lifeguards, drawing from the latest scientific research in order to optimize their effectiveness and endurance.
