New Development: Whoop Unveils Version 5.0 and Debuts MG Hardware, Introducing Pricing Structures
Fresh Take:
Whoop's long-awaited 5.0 fitness tracker is finally here, alongside the new "MG" (Medical Grade) version that offers ECG readings and blood pressure estimation. Members can upgrade for a fee of $49, or take advantage of the three new membership tiers: One, Peak, and Life, priced at $199, $239, and $359 per year, respectively.
Whoop has earned a four-star review for its integration of fitness and recovery tracking, particularly in handling strength training. This device-as-a-service model distinguishes it from other fitness trackers, as the hardware updates come with membership renewals.
What's in the Whoop 5.0 & MG
The 5.0 device maintains its sleek design, but slims down by 7%, rendering old straps incompatible. Longtime Whoop users with over 1,500 recoveries will receive replacement bands as a "Milestone collection." The battery life extends to 14 days, with only Peak and Life tier members enjoying the wireless power pack. The internal changes include a 60% faster processor and enhanced sensors.
The MG version offers an ECG feature for similar wrist-based readings as Apple Watch or Fitbit, and also features an estimated blood pressure function. To unlock this, you'll need to calibrate it with readings from a blood pressure cuff.
Membership Tiers
Whoop One ($199/year)
This budget tier offers a wired charger instead of the wireless power pack and a CoreKnit band. Downgrading results in losing access to the Health Monitor (HRV, respiratory rate, resting heart rate, and skin temperature) and the Stress Monitor.
Whoop Peak ($239/year)
Similar to the 4.0 offerings, Peak comes with the wireless power pack. Exciting additions include the forthcoming Healthspan feature, which calculates Whoop age and aging pace, along with recommendations to improve those metrics.
Whoop Life ($359/year)
The top tier offers the MG device, ECG readings, blood pressure insights, and entire Peak feature set. The MG allows for atrial fibrillation (Afib) detection.
Upgrades and Fine Print
Current members hoping for a free upgrade will have to renew their membership for an additional 12 months to qualify, whereas a $49 fee applies for immediate upgrades without an extension. Upon upgrade, you'll receive a gift kit to pass on your old device to a friend with a fresh SuperKnit band and sanitizing wipe.
Continued Support for 4.0 Users
Memberships will remain compatible with the 4.0 device, and access to the Peak tier (including Healthspan upon release) will be maintained. Those automatic renewals without a chosen tier will be rolled into the Peak membership.
