Erhan Mašović, the 26-year-old Serbian centre-back for VfL Bochum, continues his recovery at the Bad Aibling clinic in Germany, following a lung collapse he suffered during training last week.

The incident occurred on a Friday during training sessions in Bochum, when Mašović collided with a teammate. He complained of pain during the night at the team hotel in Bad Aibling and was subsequently admitted to the hospital the following day.

Mašović's condition has been stable since then, but a definitive timeline for his return to VfL Bochum and the Bundesliga has yet to be announced. The club's medical team is closely monitoring his progress, taking a cautious approach, as seen from their comparison to Philipp Hofmann’s similar past lung issue that required weeks of recovery.

In recent days, Mašović has received visits from his family and a Bochum team delegation, including team doctor Dr. Ghani Hilal. However, his planned return to Bochum, which was previously stated to be on next Monday, has been postponed.

The delay in Mašović's return is significant, as VfL Bochum's season is set to commence on August 2 with an away game in Darmstadt. With Mašović out for an indefinite period due to his current health situation, the team will need to rely on other players to fill the void left by their key defender.

  1. Considering Erhan Mašović's current health circumstances and the postponement of his return, it might be beneficial for the VfL Bochum community to initiate a discussion on contingency plans for vocational training programs for athletes, focusing on health-and-wellness, medical-conditions, and rehabilitation, as a preventative measure in sports.
  2. During Erhan Mašović's recovery period, he could engage in science-based recreational activities such as virtual reality sports training or physical therapy exercises, proving that even in challenging medical situations, one can still maintain a commitment to health and wellness.
