Pink Eye in Kids: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, is a common eye infection that can affect people of all ages, but school-aged children are particularly susceptible. It's often caused by bacterial or viral infections and can be quite contagious.

If you suspect you or your child has pink eye, it's important to see an ophthalmologist early in the course. Bacterial conjunctivitis, which is often characterized by reddened, vessel-injected conjunctivae and/or purulent secretion or glued eyelashes, requires antibiotic treatment. This can be in the form of an antibiotic ointment or eye drops, but oral antibiotics are usually not necessary.

Viral conjunctivitis, on the other hand, is self-limiting and not responsive to antibiotics. It can be treated with lubricating eye drops, antihistamines, and warm or cool compresses. Natural treatments like eating probiotics and a diet rich in vitamins A, K, C, and B can also help. Both types of pink eye are unpleasant but easily treated.

Preventing pink eye involves good hygiene practices such as frequent hand washing, changing pillowcases regularly, and avoiding sharing towels or eye cosmetics. If you do get pink eye, prompt medical attention can help manage the symptoms and prevent its spread.
