Planned Completion of New Rīga Stradiņš' Hospital Building Set for 2029

The Rīga Stradiņš Hospital new building project, planned for completion by the end of 2029, is making headway despite the presence of mould in the unfinished structure. The project, managed by the National Real Estate Management Agency (VNĪ), is receiving additional funding of approximately €30 million to accommodate key hospital departments such as admissions, emergency centre, operating theatres, and maternity ward.

The mould issue, discovered in various parts of the building, has been the biggest challenge for the project, necessitating extensive work, including dismantling sections of the current building, particularly the façade and interior sections. Fans have been installed to ensure air circulation and prevent further mould development.

The government has decided that a new general contractor must be found by VNĪ for the unfinished hospital building project. The new contractor's first task will be the fight against mould. Previously, the contract for the hospital's construction was terminated with the company Velve.

The new part of the building will house various departments, including the operating theatres, the maternity ward, and the emergency centre. The roof construction work has been completed, and the unfinished building is protected against moisture ingress.

Despite the delays caused by the structural challenges, VNĪ is committed to finishing the project by the set deadline in 2029. Legal proceedings regarding the terminated contract between Stradiņš Hospital and Velve are ongoing. Anastasija Popova, head of the Infrastructure Development Department at Stradiņš Hospital, and Lauris Vidzis, Chairman of Stradiņš Hospital, are leading the efforts to overcome these challenges.

This ambitious project aligns with the European funding period for infrastructure development, aiming to provide the hospital with modern facilities to better serve the community. The focus remains on addressing the mould problem and construction continuation under VNĪ management.
